Naval War of Emperium

WoE, but out on the open sea. Your guild arms a frigate, grows it, and sails out to send rival fleets to the bottom. The Emperium has put out to sea.

The sea chart

Every frigate at sea, in real time. Each square is a navigation position; the thumbnails mark the shores where a rowboat can land.

Getting a frigate

One guild, one ship. It all starts at the port, in front of the Master Carpenter, and only the guild leader can commission the build.

  1. 1
    Found your guild
The carpenter only deals with guild leaders. No guild, no ship.
  2. 2
    Gather the materials
Timber, steel, fabric and zeny: the full list is right below. It all has to be brought at once.
  3. 3
    Clear the tutorial
You must be four, same guild, same party, all online: storm a pirate ship and kill everything, Emperium included.
  4. 4
    Take the keys
The carpenter assigns you a free frigate, plants your Emperium on board and raises your emblem on the quay.

What the carpenter asks for

  • 500Solid Trunk
  • 500Barren Trunk
  • 50Rusty Screw
  • 35Steel
  • 20Fabric
  • z 2 500 000zeny

The tutorial then runs in a dedicated instance: your guild is alone in it, and nothing that happens there touches the real fleet.

The tutorial mission

With the materials delivered, the carpenter wants proof. He sends you aboard a pirate ship, in an instance that belongs to your guild alone: nothing that happens there touches the real fleet. Two decks to clear, then an Emperium to break.

Four players, not three

You must be exactly four, from the same guild, in the same party, and all online. One disconnected member in the party blocks the start.

  1. 1
    The deck
A pirate ship boards you. The deck is crawling with skeletons: an announcement counts down what is left.

  2. 2
    The hold
Once the deck is clear, the hold opens. More pirates, and their general at the bottom.
    Pirate Skeleton ×100
    Skeleton General ×1
  3. 3
    The Emperium
With the hold emptied, the pirate Emperium appears. Break it: the trial is passed and the whole team returns to port.

The guided tour

A bare frigate sinks fast. Between wars, everything is prepared on board and at the port.

Invest

Feed the war treasury with zeny. It pays for every upgrade and every guardian, and it's what the winner plunders.

Upgrade

The Master Carpenter raises your frigate from level 1 to 5: more endurance, more chests.

Repair

Between battles, patch the hull back up before sailing out again.

Recruit guardians

Archers and soldiers posted in the ship's rooms to repel boarders.

Raise barricades

Defences that slow the enemy and protect the ship's core.

The helm

The command post: put to sea, set a course, see who is sailing, declare war, return to the quay.

The boatswain

He builds the rowboats, keeps the hold and decides when one goes into the water. He is how you set foot ashore.

The guild leader decides

Upgrading, repairing, sailing, declaring war, breaking off a fight: anything that commits the ship goes through the guild master. The rest of the crew fights, embarks and defends.

Your warship frigate

At the port, with the Master Carpenter, your guild arms its ship, and only the guild master decides its fate. Five levels, from fragile sloop to ship of the line: the higher the frigate, the longer it holds out in war and the more loot chests it carries.

Level Cost (treasury) Endurance Chests
Nv 1 5 min 3
Nv 2 10 M 10 min 5
Nv 3 25 M 15 min 7
Nv 4 50 M 25 min 10
Nv 5 100 M 60 min 15

Endurance is the gauge the enemy must drain to sink you. Chests are the loot torn from you if you lose.

Putting to sea

The sea of Oro is a grid of cells. Your frigate moves across it in real time, and its position is visible to everyone on the naval map.

  1. 1
    Leave the quay
At the helm, "Put to sea". The whole crew aboard leaves with the ship, each keeping the spot they stood on.
  2. 2
    Set a course
"Sail", then a column (A to Z) and a row (1 to 26). The helm tells you the distance in cells and the travel time before you weigh anchor.
  3. 3
    During the crossing
A gauge tracks the progress. Come back to the helm at any time for "Stop here": the frigate halts exactly where it stands.
  4. 4
    Come home
"Return to quay" only works from a cell adjacent to your own berth: the frigate has to sail all the way home.

One cell, one ship

Two frigates never share a cell. A course onto an occupied cell (or one already targeted by another ship under way) is refused outright.

Sea lanes

Not every cell is navigable. If no route leads to the destination, the helm says so instead of sending you there.

Who is at sea?

The helm lists every frigate at sea and its level at any moment. The site's map shows the same thing, live and in position.

Lying at anchor

A stopped frigate holds its cell. That is where a rowboat goes into the water, and where a rival can come and board you.

Naval warfare

A battle is not declared from afar: you have to go and find your opponent, pull alongside, and board.

  1. 1
    Declare war
Bring your frigate onto a cell adjacent to your target, then at the helm: "Attack a neighbouring frigate". Only non-allied guilds, at sea and out of combat, appear in the list.
  2. 2
    The boarding
Both ships stop dead and your crew joins theirs. Guardians, barricades, then the Emperium: you have to carve a path to the heart of the enemy ship.
  3. 3
    Falling in battle
You respawn on the deck of your own frigate. No long walk back: straight into the assault again.
  4. 4
    The reserve drains
Each frigate burns its reserve of combat time during the battle. That is what repairing restores, between wars.

The four possible endings

Unlike a land WoE, taking the Emperium does not sink the enemy ship. Here is how a battle actually ends.

The Emperium falls

The battle stops at once. No ship sinks: the loser keeps their frigate and pays in spoils.

The reserve runs out

Only the frigate that runs out of combat time goes down. That is the one and only way to sink one.

Two ships tied

If both reserves empty together, what is still standing on each side is counted: barricades, guardians, Emperium. The side pushed in deepest sinks.

Fleeing the fight

The guild leader can break off at the helm. Fleeing costs 10% of the war chest and 1 victory point, and is refused if you have neither.

To the victor, the spoils

Naval war does not forgive: what one loses, the other takes. But losing a battle does not mean losing your ship.

If you win
  • You plunder half of the enemy's war treasury
  • You pocket their victory points
  • Your frigate stays afloat, richer and more feared
If you sink
  • Half of your war chest leaves with the winner
  • Your victory points change hands
  • Your frigate stays afloat, though, as long as your reserve never hit zero

Going ashore

A frigate does not beach itself. To set foot on land you have to put a rowboat in the water and row to a landing berth.

  1. 1
    Build a rowboat
The boatswain builds them for 50 Barren Trunk and 5,000 zeny. They stack up in the hold until they are needed.
  2. 2
    Lower it
Only at sea, at a standstill: not at the quay, not under way, not in combat. The boatswain then names the coasts in reach and their free berths.
  3. 3
    Board
The rowboat takes up to eight guild members. Each one signs on personally, alongside the gangway.
  4. 4
    Cast off and land
The pilot picks the landing berth and pushes off. On arrival, the whole registered crew lands at once.

Wave after wave

The gangway frees up the moment a rowboat pushes off: the next one leaves without waiting for the first to reach land.

Eight seats, no more

Once the boat is full, latecomers wait for the next wave.

Holding a berth

A beached rowboat stays on its shore with no time limit. It marks the berth and serves as its crew's way back.

Driving off a rival

Landing on a berth held by another guild throws their boat out, lost for good. No berth can ever stay blocked.
